Chapter Four

MATT KNEW he was living on borrowed time.

He stroked Frost’s thigh, because Frost had spent the night for the third time in a week. They’d had a shower last night, and Frost had blown his mind with some creative uses of soft soap.

Frost murmured, turning toward him more closely.

The bull riding season was gearing up toward its end, though, and Frost was out of byes starting this weekend. He had to get back to it if he wanted to stay in the money.

Matt didn’t want him to go. Two months away and then Frost said he would retire, but what if he didn’t?

What if he was just a rambler and there was nothing else for it?

Matt could understand that. He’d traveled for work for years. He’d loved being on the road, and a man had to want to settle down before he did.

There was no way he could ask Frost to stay just for him. They really barely knew each other, and Frost had a lot of money to make.

“You’re thinking loud enough I can hear.” Frost kissed his chest. “Shh.”

“Sorry. Sorry, I can’t help it.” Matt thought a lot early in the morning, just before he got up to let out the dog. Angelia loved to explore in the hour before dawn.

“I’m sorry.” Frost said it quietly. “I’m really into you, but I have to go.”

“I know that.” He leaned down to kiss Frost on the mouth. “I’m not sitting here pining. I just worry about shit. Bacon and eggs?”

“Stop.” Frost held him when he would have rolled out of bed. “I don’t want you to make me breakfast. I just want to hang on for a little while.”

He stared into Frost’s hazel eyes, then nodded. He scooted closer so they could cuddle in. “Sorry.” Matt was apologizing mostly for being a dork.

“We’re both stupid.” Frost kissed his jaw just below his ear.

“We are. Where are you this weekend?”

Frost paused, clicking his tongue against his teeth. “Uh… Des Moines.”

“Ew.” He winked. “I’ll be glad to be here, not there.”

“Yeah, yeah. In a few weeks, we’ll be in Connecticut. You should come up. The hotel we stay at there rocks.”

“Hey, I’ll be watching out for your momma. I have a job now.”

“No giving up on your horses.” Frost pinched his hip, making him jump.

“Never.” His horses were his life, right behind Angelia. She was his best girl, and she insisted on sleeping with him and Frost. She wasn’t jealous; she was part of the pack, and so was Frost now.

“Glad to hear it.” Frost relaxed against him, breathing deep. Frost did like to sleep in a little longer than Matt did.

He listened to Frost breathe and thought maybe he might go up to Connecticut in October. Just for the weekend. Hersch or Dalton would help Miz Barton.

Matt knew he was a fool, but even after a few short weeks, he figured he was a fool in love.

He might as well ride it until it ended.
